NPPL Championship Paintball 2009 Video Game Review
Made by the same developers that brought you the Greg Hasting's paintball games, NPPL Championship Paintball 2009 is the most recent video game the worlds #1 publisher of paintball video games has created.
Their most recent... and probably their last. I say this because this game was an utter disappointment. You usually think a video game gets better as a series continues, that's not the case with this paintball game.
The controls are similar to the Greg Hasting's games, but whats different with this game is for some reason the gameplay has gotten worse. Instead of being able to lean and run down the field like in Greg Hastings MAX'D, in NPPL Championship Paintball 2009 this cannot be done. When you lean and move the aiming reticule moves all over the place, making it difficult to lean out from behind a bunker and shoot.
The AI in this game are predictable, and almost always go for the flag when you are the last player, leaving you the chance to just sit behind a bunker and plunk them in the back.
Another aggravating aspect of this game was the gear. Although it was cool to be able to spend earned money from tournaments on new gear, the new gear had little affect on gameplay. Invert Mini's were about as good as weaker paintball guns, and barrels did nothing to accuracy.
In fact, the only thing worth doing was amping up teammates attributes.
I hated the fact you could cheat in the game. Its something I wish they never put in the Greg Hastings games. Sure you can get caught and punished by a ref, but all this is doing is teaching players its ok to wipe as long as they don't get caught.
For those of you reading this, wiping is not a part of the game, its a part of the problem, but enough about that.
A cool part of the game is being able to make your own field like you could in the Greg Hasting's series, only this time around they allow you to play on them online.
Playing on LIVE can be fun, but the downside is it can be repetitive. Just about every match is a run and shoot fiesta with little use of bunkers. To get a closer feel of what online play can be like, check out this video. It shows a LIVE match on one of the more fun fields in my opinion.
If you are spent on getting a paintball game, spring for Greg Hastings MAX'D. It is far better than NPPL Championship 2009. Even though it is for the first xbox, it still has cool tournaments and better gameplay.
If you must have the latest paintball video game just so you can play it on LIVE, then you'll have to settle for NPPL Championship Paintball 2009. If you can grab a copy for under $20 then its worth trying out for yourself.
