In my opinion, if woodsball is what you are solely into playing, and you don't care if your paintball marker is not considered a "speedball marker," then the best paintball gun you could get is the Tippmann X7 Phenom.

Features Explained

The Spyder MRX has a realistic military look which makes it great for MilSim or scenario play.

The most notable feature is the Dual Loading System that makes it so the Spyder MRX can be fed from the magazine or the hopper. Turning the barrel changes from the hopper to the magazine, or visa versa. The detachable magazine uses a spring to push the paintballs into the marker, and it holds 10 rounds.

The Eko valve is efficient with air and helps the marker get up to 1,600 shots on a 20 oz CO2 tank. It operates on either CO2 or HPA.

The offset clamping feed neck, and the trigger frame are made out of a high impact polymer.  While most Spyders cock on the top of the gun, this one cocks on the side.

There's a sight on the carry handle, and a front sight on the barrel. The sight has two adjustable  settings; one is for regular light, and the other is for low light. The piticanny rails are located on the barrel shroud and on the top of the marker.

Because it has multiple piticanny rails, there's a variety of accessories such as scopes, red dot sights, flashlights, bipods, grips, and more that can be added.

The Spyder MRX compares to other stacked tube blowback markers in terms of operation. The Metadyne Thumper has a variety of features. What stands out the most is that it can be cocked in a few different ways. This sets it apart from the rest of the paintball pumps out there. The Metadyne Thumper can be cocked via the barrel, the side of the marker, or the back of the marker.

Cocking the Metadyne Thumper

Most pumps need to be pulled towards you to load a paintball. To load a paintball into the Metadayne Thumper, you pull the barrel out. There's no pump handle, the barrel itself is pulled to load the paintball.

On the side of the marker is a lever where you can place your thumb. By pushing it out with your thumb, you can cock it. It's ambidextrous, so it can handle cocking on the right or left side.

On the back of the gun is another spot where you can cock the gun with your thumb. Just push it in with your thumb and it will load a paintball.

One of the problems with a traditional pump marker is that it can be difficult to pump in a tight spot. Cocking via the side or back of the Metadyne is much easier to do in tight spots.

Unique Design

Many pumps out there are based on just a few designs. The Metadyne Thumper is the first of it's kind, and has a completely unique design. You can see that there aren't any external hoses. Their is a vertical ASA where you can screw in 12 gram cartridges or a small CO2 tank such as a 4 oz.

To use a bigger tank, you would need to install a bottomline adapter to use a bigger HPA or CO2 tank. In a bottomline setup you would have an external hose connecting to the vertical air adapter.

With the design of the marker and the ball detent, it's impossible to double feed it. When the paintball is loaded, it drops directly down from the feed and doesn't move, so loading another paintball is impossible.

For consistent air pressure there is an internal regulator. This is a nice feature for helping to maintain a steady FPS. Consistency after all, helps with accuracy.

Only Use Petroleum Jelly to Lubricate the Metadyne Thumper

Using any other kind of lubricant will ruin the valve. Only petroleum jelly such as Vasoline can be used. Apply a small amount of petroleum jelly in the ASA, gas it up, and shoot it a few times to make it work it's way through the marker.

Lightweight & Compact

It's both small and lightweight. With a Deadlywind carbon fiber barrel installed, it weighs under 2 lbs.

Upgrades & Accessories

Since it is autococker threaded, there are tons of different barrels or barrel kits out there that will fit.

Also available is a 45 grip upgrade, and an open class adapter that accepts CCM threads. The open class adapter lets you install a feed neck and use a hopper if you don't want to play with a stock class setup.

Also available are brass cocking rods and cocking levers to install on the right or left side of the marker.

The RAP4 T68 is a semi-automatic (it can be upgraded to electronic with fully automatic and burst options).

If a 20 round magazine isn't enough for you, the SplitFire Dual Feed Adapter allows you to use a magazine and a hopper. With this upgrade, if you run out of paint in your hopper, with the turn of a dial you can switch to the magazine. This also means you can store First Strike rounds in your magazine and normal paintballs in the hopper. If you need precision shots, you can easily switch to First Strike rounds by turning the dial, and then switch back to your hopper as needed.

No compressor? No scuba tanks? No nearby field? No problem!

Paintball players who live too far from a paintball field, don't have access to scuba tanks and a place that will refill them, or can't afford an expensive compressor, don't have many options.

Made for air guns, but also works for HPA paintball tanks

So what's a solution for paintballers that want to fill their HPA tanks cheaply? The Benjamin Hand Pump. Although it was created for refilling air guns, it works as-is for HPA paintball tanks too.

How the Benjamin hand pump works

It works like a bike pump. To fill a tank, connect it to the quick-disconnect and begin pumping. Stand on the base to stabilize while pumping. When done using, open the bleed valve and disconnect the tank. It's simple, but it's not easy.

Strength and effort are required

Reviewers say you need strength to use it, so younger kids may have a hard time. The Benjamin hand pump can fill up to 3,600 psi. Be prepared to expend effort and time. It takes around 110 pump strokes to reach 2,000 psi.

Quick disconnect, bleed valve, gauge, and moisture filter

Moisture is bad inside of HPA tanks, so it's comforting to know it has a moisture filter in place. There's also a gauge that will show you the pressure you are currently at.

Fill your tank and exercise at the same time

If you want Popeye arms, aren't lazy, or impatient, then you will appreciate the convenience the Benjamin hand pump provides.

For the hardcore MilSim paintballers out there, this article and the video below will help you find the best MilSim paintball gun. "The best" will always depend on who you ask, so instead of picking and telling you what I think the best MilSim paintball gun is, I would rather give you guidelines on how to find the one that is the best for you.

Has a Stock

For precision aiming and control over your marker, a stock is a must. Adjustable stocks are ideal. They can be shortened when in tight spaces, and elongated when more precision is needed.

Remote or Built in Air Source

Some stocks, specifically the stocks that RAP4 makes, hold a CO2 or HPA bottle inside. While others let you hook up a remote directly to it.

It is awkward and not ideal to have a tank directly under the stock. This makes the profile of the marker bigger and just plain awkward to handle. The best MilSim paintball gun will have a stock where the bottle is contained inside of it, or use a remote so that the bottle isn't mounted on the marker.

Functional

Just because it looks cool doesn't mean it is functional. A polished turd may be shiny, but it's still poop. If there is a scope/flashlight/dot sight on the marker you are considering getting, make sure it works. If it has built-in sights, make sure they work.

One big problem paintballers often have with sights is that they are impossible to see while wearing a mask. The mask gets in the way and makes it so they can't see through their sight. This renders it useless and while it may look cool, it will only create a bigger target for an opponent to hit.

If there's a bipod, make sure it can rotate, otherwise it will be difficult to turn the marker from side to side while shooting.

Magazine or Non-obstructive Loader

For combat realism, go for a magazine. However, because magazines don't hold a lot of paintballs, this isn't appealing to some. If you are in that boat, look for a MilSim marker that has a non-obstructive loader.

Paintball markers with a loader on the top will obstruct your view. You want to be able to see as much as you can on the field. The less your view is obstructed, the better.

Being able to reload quickly is a must. It must be easy and quick to reload. If it uses magazines, they should come out and pop in easy. The longer it takes for you to reload, the more time your are giving your opponents to move up on you.

Fits Your Style of Play

Some like to feel like Rambo, some like to feel like a sniper. Think about the style of play that appeals to you. Whether it be spraying everything in sight or taking one shot at a time, pick a MilSim marker that matches your playing style.

Fits Like a Glove

It is highly recommended to try before you buy. Pick it up, feel the weight. Is it balanced? Or is it top heavy? Front heavy? Back heavy? Too heavy?

You should feel comfortable holding it. A foregrip can help in steadying the marker. How does the grip feel? Is it too big, too small? Do you feel clumsy holding it?

The best MilSim paintball gun will fit you like a glove. It will be comfortable to hold and easy for you to handle.

Adaptable

Accessories can be fun. So if you want to be able to add flashlights, scopes, red dot sights, foregrip, bipod, or even a paint grenade launcher, get one that has rails for mounting extras, or the capability to do so.

Durable

Your MilSim marker should be as tough enough to handle the rigors of the playing field. Consider what would happen if the marker you are looking at got wet, dirty, or even dropped (by accident of course). If there are a lot of holes in the barrel or openings to the internals, how will it affect performance if you are playing in a dirty, dusty climate? What would happen if it was raining?

Choose Like a US Marine

Having long been the fantasy marker of woodsballers, scenario-goers and hardcore milsimers, it was only a matter of time before someone actually produced a paintball shotgun. And, who better to create one than RAP4; a company that is all about making milsim paintball products.

First of its Kind

Gracing itself as the first of its kind to hit the market, the RAP68 Shotgun is certainly a landmark in the world of paintball.

It is made to look like the FN Tactical Police Shotgun. The pump stroke is long and mimics a real shotgun. Pump it to load a paintball, and pull the trigger to shoot.

Also, there is a feature called bolt lock that makes it so you cannot shoot the gun when you are out of paintballs. This makes it more like a shotgun. There is also an anti-double feed feature that makes it so you can't accidentally load two paintballs into the chamber.

The .68 caliber paintballs are stored internally. Depending on the model you get, it can hold anywhere from 10-16 rounds + 1 in the chamber.

Lock and Load, it's GO TIME!!!

To load, turn the RAP68 upside down, open the chamber which is in between the pump handle and the trigger guard, and begin loading the paintballs, one at a time.

There's a flip-up front site and an adjustable rear site, and an optional tactical stock for added realism. The stock is adjustable and can slide in to be more compact, and can extend out for those with longer arms.

The velocity is adjustable from 200-380 fps, although for paintball playing it shouldn't be over 285 fps. The maximum range is 300 feet, although that doesn't matter much since most paintballs won't break over 120 feet.

To adjust the velocity, needle nose pliers and an allen wrench is required. The back needs to be unscrewed and removed as well as a screen and spring. Then with the appropriate allen wrench, screw in to decrease, and back it out to increase the velocity.

To let you know that there is air in the gun, there is a red indicator at the back that pops out when it is gassed up.

3 Models to Chose From

There are three different models of the RAP68 to choose from. These weigh around 5.5 lbs. The barrels are brass and are unported.

1. The 12 inch barrel model holds 10 paintballs + 1 in the chamber.
2. The 14 inch barrel model holds 13 paintballs + 1 in the chamber.
3. The 16 inch barrel model holds 16 paintballs + 1 n the chamber.

Top RAP68 Accessories

The stock you see in the picture is an optional add-on. Because the RAP68 paintball shotgun also has a weaver tactical rail on it, you can install a number of goodies such as sights or flashlights.

Here are a few accessories the RAP68 can take.

1. Scopes, Sights, Lasers, & Flashlights - Spot your target from afar with a magnifying scope, or use a red dot site to guide your aim at close ranges. Use a flashlight to see the whites of their eyes... and then put a paintball between them.
2. Stocks - RAP4 makes several adjustable stocks that each hold a different size of tank or cartridge, including; 12g CO2 cartridge, 13ci 3000psi HPA tank, 5oz CO2, 45g CO2, or 60g CO2 tank. They also sell a stock that has a remote line through it so you can mount a tank on your back instead of the gun.
3. CO2 or HPA Tank - Standard CO2 and HPA tanks fit and work with this marker. A butt plate on a CO2 tank will function similarly to a stock, but will look less tactical.
4. Remote Line Without a Stock - With a remote line the RAP68 loses the ability to mount to your shoulder, which in turn will decrease your accuracy. However, it also makes the RAP68 lighter because there isn't a tank mounted directly to it, and more maneuverable in tight spaces. Even if you can't hit anyone, at least you'll look cool shooting your shotgun from the hip.

Custom Modifications

For those that enjoy tinkering, or for those who have the money to pay someone else to do them, here are a few mods that one RAP68 owner did or suggested in the video below.

• Bore the barrel for inserts - Because the barrel has its own threads, there are no aftermarket barrels available. For someone who wants the ability to match their paint to their barrel, they can pay someone to bore their barrel or do it themselves if they have the machinery. Then you can different size inserts to match the paint you are shooting.
• Shotgun shell holder - In the video below you can see what this looks like. The shotgun shells mounted to the side of the marker serve a purpose too, they hold paintballs.
• Polished and modified bolt - Watch the video below to see what it looks like. He says it helped reduce paint chopping. He cut a cross pattern in it and polished the bolt. The RAP68 in the video below is an older model of the RAP68, the new models now have ball detents.

How it Compares

So, how does the RAP68 shotgun compare to other pump paintball guns? In design it is similar to pumps using the classic, time-tested, Nelson valve design. The CCI Phantom and Arrow Precision Sterling are both Nelson-based pumps.

The RAP68 is most similar to the little-known Dukie DSG, which is also a tactical paintball shotgun. The Dukie DSG is not well known because it's a one-man show behind it. Currently you have to contact him through the mcarterbrown.com forum. The Dukie DSG costs $785 Canadian dollars.

The RAP68 costs $399.99, and the price is the same no matter what barrel size you get. For a paintball pump, this lies around the upper-middle price range.

Who Should Get It

Kids shouldn't get it. It weighs 5.5 lbs and it's big, so people with small arms may have trouble holding it. Those who just want to spray paint shouldn't get it; this is a pump, shoot and repeat gun. No fancy fingers needed.

The RAP68 can be used as a training tool for law enforcement, and used by the police to shoot unruly crowds and overly passionate rioters with an assortment of non-lethal and less-lethal torture balls such as rubber balls and pepperballs. Ouch.

Anyone who likes playing pump paintball, loves milsim, scenarios, and tactical looking paintball guns, might consider the RAP68.

Shooting the RAP68 with Velcro Balls

Sprays, wipes, fans, and thermal lenses have been used to minimize and prevent fog, but none of them are 100% effective. Fog will happen, especially in humid conditions, and can ruin a game. There are a few mask fog solutions, but one of the best I've come across right now is so simple, it makes me wonder why it hasn't made its way onto every players mask. The coolest part is it can be used safely while playing, which means you won't have to cram your hand on the inside of your mask to clear fog.

Can Be Used While Playing

The best part about this is it can be kept on the lense the entire time. Two magnets, with lense-worthy fabric (the kind you use to clean lenses if you do not want to scratch them), are held together through magnetic attraction. The larger one goes on the outside, and the smaller one on the inside. The larger one is duly sized so that you can grab it and move it across the lense for easy fog removal. I'll add a vid demonstrating how they work soon.

How Strong Are The Magnets?

I've tried to bump the magnets off the lense, but couldn't do it. Shaking it violently didn't even break the attraction. Now, I suppose you could knock it off by bumping across something, but even then I can't imagine that will happen. They are very strong magnets, and as long as you move it off to the side, preferable the to the top of the lense then you should have no issues with knocking it off. A much more likely scenario is it would get shot off by a paintball.

Below you can see the 2 models I reviewed. The one on the top is the paintball-specific unit, and the bottom unit is their scuba mask one. Both worked great, but had some differences that I discuss at the end of this review.

Does it Hinder Visibility?

This was one of my primary concerns, as most people including myself would likely find staring at a round black thing through the lense to be obstructive. Most masks however have plenty of lense to tuck the thing outside of your periphrial range. After shifting the wiper to the top right corner of my lense I no longer saw it.

Cheap and Effective On-Field Fog Fighting Accessory

Personally, I'm glad I got a chance to review this, otherwise I may have never heard about it. There are 2 models that Wide-i sells that fit paintball masks. The specific one for Paintball Masks is larger, so grabbing ahold of it is easier, plus it has a stronger magnetic attriction. The Scuba Mask one is smaller, but easier to move across the lense because it has less magnetic attraction. Personally, I like that one because it is smaller, and has less of a chance of getting shot off. It stayed on great, and can be tucked away easily outside of visible range. The great thing about paintball is there are markers for every type of player, with any level of budget. The Kingman Spyder Advancer is a step above the entry level Opus. It costs a bit more, but is worth the price because it comes with eyes. Eyes drastically cut the amount of chops, and for the cost-minded paintballer, it is a must have feature. You'll save your balls by making every shot count.

GI Milsim FM50

For those looking for a military looking paintball marker, the GI FM50 is a must consider. It costs a little bit more than the Advancer, and while it does not come with eyes, it does offer a highly upgradeable platform. There are loads of accessories for it. CAR stocks, foregrips, grenade launcher, tactical rails, feed clips, you name it, the FM50 has the accessories a woodsballer dreams of.

Protective gear in paintball goes much further than the mask. Nowadays, it's ok to play it safe on the field, whereas before you were chastised and tied to the stake for wearing neck or elbow pads. Because it is more openly accepted, companies are offering much more protective gear. For those that value their body and want to be safely covered on the field, then read on for the types of protective paintball gear you can find for sale today.

The Different Classes of Protection Available

Aside from there being gear that protects the different body parts, there usually is a target feature each padded accessory tries to accomplish. Some companies make protection for athletes that want to perform. To make their gear perform, they usually opt for lighter materials and less coverage to keep the player as cool as possible. If less restriction and keeping cool are 2 priorities of yours, then you should opt for protective gear made for performance.

The other option is to go for protection that emphasizes protection. Gear that esteems to be protective will offer complete coverage, and use tougher material. While it won't be as cool (temperature wise) -- you will have maximal coverage.

Paintball Masks - Protection For Your Face

The most widely known accessory is of course the paintball mask. Over time, the paintball mask has evolved from a simple snowboard style goggle that only offered coverage of the eyes, to a full blown head-encasing mask. There are so many styles and feature rich masks available today that you could easily get caught up for weeks trying to find the right one for you. Knowing whether you want protection or performance is the first step, and you can see what that looks like below.

A performance style paintball mask will have a small profile, be lightweight, keep you cool, and offer maximum visibility. The Dye I4 is a perfect example of a mask made for performance as it encapsulates all of these features. It has a huge lens that nearly goes ear to ear of the mask itself. It offers coverage of the bottom of the forehead down to the tip of the chin, which is more than enough for the professional paintball athletes, and because it is so small, it won't feel like an oven is on your face.

A highly protective paintball mask will cover the entire head. It will cover all parts of the ears, chin, parts of the neck, top of the head, and forehead. Unlike the Dye I4, this type of mask leaves no areas of the head exposed, including the ears. The material used in this kind of mask is tougher, and will not fold in on itself from the impact of a paintball as some of the more flexible masks tend to do.

Paintball Gloves - Coverage For Your Hands

Like the mask, paintball gloves too have evolved from hard shelled biker style gloves, to full fingered protection. Those that have been shot in the hand undeniably understand why gloves are necessary. The hand doesn't have as much tissue as other parts of the body, which means tendons, joints, and bare bone are all left to absorb the impact. Not only can your hand get seriously bruised from a direct shot, it can also get quite cut up from fragments of the paintball shell.

For the performance minded player, gloves can come entirely fingerless or fingerless only on the middle and pointer fingers. They offer this because many players feel having their trigger fingers covered slows down their rate of fire, which a stiff glove seemingly can do.

Valken, a new leader in paintball, has become well known for creating and selling high-quality paintball products. For superior performance, I'd look no further than the products they offer, especially their 2 finger gloves they are currently selling. This glove has one hole for both your index and middle finger, allowing them to move about freely and let you easily strum away on your marker's trigger. They only cost 27 bucks, which is a decent price for the quality and style Valken offers.

On the other hand, a highly protective glove will offer superior coverage, and supply quality padding on the backside of the hand, from the tips of the fingers to the wrist. The best ones for protection have a hard shell on the outside. If you take a shot to hand with one of these, you won't feel a thing. The price isn't that bad too. These gloves offer superior protection and affordability, and can be yours for around $17.

Coverage For Your Neck - Paintball Neck Protectors

The neck is filled with soft tissue, nerves, glands, and the ever important larynx, all this makes for one of the weirdest feeling areas to get shot in. If you have ever been fortunate enough to get blasted in the throat you know what I mean. It is in the least sense uncomfortable. Not only do you feel like your throat could close (which realistically can happen), you get the pleasure of hosting a nice ring that resembles that of ringworm. Awesome.

The JT Cool Max neck protector is about as simple as a neck protector can get. It has a velcro strap so you can easily take it off and put it on. With holes for breath-ability, you'll be cooler than you would be with an all-neoprene neck protector. Simple and cheap. What more could you ask for?

Sometimes you can get the best of both worlds. This neck protector, along with the above one, happens to be pretty darn breathable. Because of its innovative design, it also offers great protection. In fact, If you have the money, I'd grab this one before any of the others. However, if $25 bucks for a cool and safe neck isn't worth it, the opt for a simple protector like the above one.

Coverage For Your Chest - Paintball Chest Protectors

The chest tends to be one of the most common places to take a hit to, as it represents a large section of the human body (go figure!). Protection for this area comes in a couple forms. It used to be that chest protectors only protected your... chest. Today's version is more vest-like, and offers coverage of the back and sides. You can find them integrated into one entire shirt/unit, or as a vest. I personally would only recommend the ones that are integrated into a shirt. The vests are uncomfortable and tend to slide up around the neck. This is based on my own personal experience.

Empire makes great apparel for paintball. Among their excellent line of products, lies the Ground Pounder chest protector. It has sold pretty well because of the price, which is even lower now because it has been out for a while. You can get it for $20, making it cheaper than the Dye neck protector you saw above! The padding isn't the thickest, but that's because this vest was made to endure long day's of hot summer paintball.

This is one of the thickest protective shirt vests available, and can be worn underneath a regular shirt or jersey. BT released this vest a couple years ago, and it has been received pretty well among the recreational paintball community. It gives them everything they are looking for -- complete protection of the chest, back, shoulders and sides.

Coverage For Arms - Paintball Arm Pads

Also known as elbow pads, these arm sleeves offer protection for both the elbow and forearm. I can't even count how many times I've take a bounce off of my arm pads. They have been responsible for keeping me in the game longer, and protecting my elbows while crawling. If you are a competitive player, you shouldn't be without these pads. For one, as you get better, you reveal less of your profile as you snap shoot. Your arms/elbow become one of the more prevalent targets as they can catch a hit on your way back into the bunker after snapping. Because of this reason, you should invest in a soft set of arm pads. Trust me, you'll be glad you did.

Planet eclipse makes a highly breathable elbow pad. They are soft and fit the arm nicely -- lose enough to get some air in, yet they don't move because of the added thumb hook (a nice addition I must say). I have a friend who owns a pair of these, so I got to try them on. They are superb. Much more breathable than the ones I own.

If you are looking for a thicker padded one, then take a look at the Proto Defender. The padding on these suckers are thick. In fact, these are the ones I use. I can honestly say they offer superior protection and bounce-ability. I've beaten these things to a pulp. From crawling over jagged rocks and gravel, to taking multiple shots to the forearm. The best thing is, I can't remember one instance where a paintball actually broke on my arm pads. From what I remember most hits bounced.

Coverage For Your Thighs & Special Parts - Paintball Slider Shorts

Not too long ago I took a shot to the corn-hole. Needless to say I felt violated, it was almost as if I had experienced a form of rape. You however, don't need to go through that, in fact, I hope you never experience it. One way you can void yourself of this experience is to grab a pair of padded slider shorts, preferably one that protects the back of legs and your crown jewels.

This sliding short is specially formulated to be flexible and breathable, yet still offer enough protection where needed. Dye has been known to make quality products at a premium price. In short, you get what you pay for.

Another great option is these sliding shorts made by Empire. They happen to have thicker padding than others, but also retain a good amount of flexibility. They also are pretty affordable.

Coverage For Your Legs/Knees - Paintball Knee & Shin Pads

Players that tend to move a lot, and take all kinds of positions while playing paintball, will find that it doesn't take much to get banged up knees. This is especially the case if you are playing outside on rough terrain. I invested in a pair because I often find myself shooting in the prone position on all kinds of terrain. I also tend to rest on my knees and shins alone. Doing that on a rocky surface isn't the most comfortable thing. In fact, just ask a friend of mine. During Oklahoma D-Day he tried to slide on the hellish Oklahoma terrain, and ended up bruising a ligament in his knee, which put him through some pain for the rest of the week. Much like a neck protector, knee pads are just one of those things you don't consider getting until you've had one of those experiences.

Some players will only need straight up protection for their knees. I can understand this, as my knee and shin protectors do get pretty hot in the summer. Valken makes a quality knee protector for players that just want to comfortably kneel and cushion their knees.

Other players (including me), don't mind the heat, and want padding that covers the shins as well as the knees. Getting a set of pads that offer this is a must if you crawl, kneel or sit on your heels a lot while playing. I tend to do all of that, so my legs took a massive beating before I invested in a pair of knee and shin pads.
