The New JT QLS Series Paintball Masks

JT has brought many masks into the world of paintball, and many of them such as the Proteus and JT Flex have been well received.

New to JT's lineup of paintball masks is the QLS series, which sports 3 different of masks for each level of paintballer. Each mask features JT's QuickLock Lens System, which enables players to quickly remove a dirty lens extremely fast and lock it back in when done cleaning.

The QLS feature is very handy. Other masks are nearly impossible to remove the lens from, which makes cleaning and replacing a lens time consuming and annoying.

You can get the QLS feature on the three masks JT released in the QLS series...

The QLS Carnivore is almost everything a beginner in paintball needs to get into the game. I say almost because it is missing just one thing. If you don't plan on playing that much, and play once a month then the Carnivore will do the trick. However, the fact that it has only a single pane lens and not a thermal one is frustrating. No player likes a foggy paintball mask no matter how often they play, which means you will need to buy a $20 thermal lens to keep fogging to a minimum. Instead of paying $30 for this mask, and $20 on top of that for a new lens, you could always buy a cheap mask for under $50 on eBay that has a thermal lens, but its up to you. On another note, if you are set on getting a mask that can easily change lenses, then getting a QLS mask is understandable.

The QLS Reaper is JT's mid-range mask. Just like the Carnivore it too comes with a single pane lens (bah, why!?). Some of the features you can find on the Reaper include an adjustable chin strap, removable visor, and a removable gel "skirt." This skirt is the gel insert that covers the mouth, and can be interchanged with other colored inserts.

At the top of the line is the QLS Status. This mask features a soft ear piece for extra bounce factor, removable visor, thermal lens (FINALLY), and a smaller profile face guard made to deflect oncoming paint.

With the QuickLock Lens System and a 270 degree of visibility, these masks are sure to be a hit, or at least one of them will (the status of course.) The only thing limiting the line is the fact the Carnivore and Reaper do not come with thermal lenses. If you want a thermal lens along with the QLS feature, you'll have to drop $100 for the Status or buy an aftermarket lens for the Carnivore or Reaper.

On a final note, the QLS line represents JT's unrelenting quest to provide paintballers with good looking masks that satisfy a need. While the first two masks in this line lack thermal lenses, the QLS feature alone may make them well worth the money, especially for the paintballer looking for an easy lens swapping/cleaning solution.

Following behind these popular masks are paintball masks that have recently hit the market. Such masks as Empire's Event Goggles, Vforce's Grill mask, and Proto's Axis.

There has always been one paintball mask I never could never figure out why it was so popular, and that's the JT Flex series. These masks are wildly popular because they offer a little more than just comfort and great clarity. The soft chin piece is idolized for its ability to deflect paintballs. I can understand how that is great, but have you ever felt it? Its insanely flexible... which not only means paintballs have a lesser chance of breaking on it, but also means there is a higher chance of a paintball passing right through it and into your teeth. Trust me I've seen it. A friend of mine swore up and down the JT Flex was the greatest mask you could have until he took a hit to the chin. Turns out a flexible chin piece isn't that great at STOPPING paintballs when you take a direct hit.

Imagine getting bunkered in the face wearing one of those. Not a pretty picture if you ask me. I think I'll stick with paintball masks that protect my mouth area, let alone my WHOLE face. If I wanted to get a split lip I'd get in a fight with Chuck Liddel, but that's just my opinion. Don't let it stop you.

Never Let Your Mask Fog Up & Ruin Another Game Again

Running, jumping, diving, rolling, sliding, are all very common in paintball. Moving generates heat, and heat is a paintball mask's mortal enemy.

Single pane lenses are a pain. They fog up very easily, and in the game of paintball, having a fogged up lens will greatly hinder your ability to play. You might as well be playing with a sack over your head, and guess where to shoot. It's quite suspenseful to play paintball without being able to see, you almost expect to be wasted any second. You go from, "Where are they so I can shoot them?" to, "Where are they so I don't get wasted??!!!"

Anti-fog sprays and gels can help for a little bit, but reapplication is usually constantly needed to keep your lens fog free.

The solution to all your fogging troubles? Pick up a thermal lens. Thermal lenses have two lenses that seal air in between them to prevent fogging. It's crazy to not get one. The difference of playing with a thermal lens to a single pane lens is incomparable. A thermal lens will help prevent fogging much better than a single pane lens.

There are some people, and playing conditions, that can overcome even a thermal lens's ability to fight away fog. When this happens, I recommend picking up some anti-fog gel. I like anti-fog gel over anti-fog spray. From my personal experience, C-Clear anti-fog gel has worked better and longer than any anti-fog spray I have tried.

Applying anti-fog gel, such as C-Clear, will clean your lens, prevent fogging, and fill in minor scratches. You can apply it to both sides of your thermal lens and have excellent fog protection. Using both a thermal lens and anti-fog gel, I have never had my mask fog up while playing.

If you want even more fog protection, you can buy a fan for your mask (if you have a mask that a fan will fit in). Although fans are sometimes referred to as "noisy," I'd much rather sacrifice my quietness for a mask that I can see out of.

Let's review the levels of fog protection in paintball

1. Single pane lens = HORRIBLE at preventing fog.

2. Single pane lens with anti-fog/spray or gel = It's OK...

3. Thermal lens = GREAT fog protection, most players won't need anything more.

4. Thermal lens with anti-fog gel = EXCELLENT fog protection for hot or cold playing conditions and long games.

5. Thermal lens with anti-fog gel and a fan = AMAZING. Most people won't need this much to stop the fogging. If your mask STILL fogs up even when using all of this, you must be shooting out steam out of your eyeballs or something.
