If your short on money, or have time to kill, here's an easy way to make some homemade airball bunkers you can throw up in your backyard for a makeshift paintball field.

What materials do you need to craft a homemade air bunker? A couple of trash bags, a vinyl bag you can stuff them in, and a cover you can use for the bunker itself. Now you probably are thinking, trash bags won't hold air, how can they work? Well, its pretty obvious they won't hold air forever, but they should hold up for a couple of weeks, if not a month or two before you have to huff them back up.

Looking for discount paintball bunkers for sale? There are a couple of places you can go to buy brand new paintball bunkers, but only one place I know of thats worth your time when looking to buy cheap paintball bunkers.

The one place I know of where you can buy paintball bunkers on sale or discount is eBay. I'll tell you one thing, whenever a paintball field goes out of business, or cycles bunkers, their first stop is eBay. The last thing a field owner wants to do is put up with with the hassle of selling on a forum. Auctions on eBay are fast and easy, less hassle, and you are guaranteed to at least get fair market value for your used goods (if you list them right).

With the economy the way it is, nows the time to buy paintball bunkers. Just as real estate investors buy when the market hits a low you should hop on the great deals time has presented. Theres no reason to be hesitant about buying the field you've always wanted, if you are you'll miss this opportunity and end up paying 3 times more when things get back to normal (and they always do). I know plenty of paintball fields that are opening up around my area through other broke fields assets. Their loss is your win.

Make Homemade Paintball Bunkers Out of Carpet

If you have a couple rolls of spare carpet laying around and want to put it to good use, here's a paintball bunker you can use it on.

If you ever wanted to make a homemade paintball bunker that resembled an airball bunker, or more specifically an airball pyramid bunker, then your in luck. This particular bunker is easy to make, easy to move with two people and lasts a long time.

As you can see, all you need to do is build a triangle frame, for those of you that failed geometry its simply 3 pieces of wood setup like a Tepee. You can either screw the pieces together at the top (which is recommended), or lash them together. If you choose to lash them together you will need to make sure it is especially tight, and that you nail or screw on some support boards connecting the three beams. Next you just cut your carpet into triangle pieces and fasten them on to each section, you can add multiple layers to create a more durable/long lasting paintball bunker.

The cool thing about these bunkers is paintballs bounce right off of them at longer distances, which means you will have plenty of seconds or thirds available to play with. Perfect bunker for the paintballer on a budget.

Cheap Grass Paintball Bunkers

What could be cheaper and easier to find than grass? Unless you live in the desert you probably shouldn't waste your time reading this, but for those of you that want to see a great cheap way to put your grass clippings to good use then read on.

Grass is everywhere, before you mow and even more so after you do. If you have a bagging lawn mower this is the perfect idea for cheap and effective paintball bunkers. For one thing these bunkers are three dimensional, the circular feature of this bunker allows it to be used from multiple angles, so your field can be played in multiple directions. Another great thing is they are probably the closest you will ever get to an airball bunker without breaking the bank, so if your are building a field for the sole purpose of practicing for tournaments then this is your best bet. Sure paintballs do not bounce of them, but they do get stuck in them, which proves to be another reason why you should make some - you can reuse the paintballs that stick in them over and over again.

Yep, you read correctly, this is a homemade paintball bunker made with grass. Just as air bunkers are filled with air, these grass bunkers are filled with grass. This was an idea for a cheap paintball bunker that actually turned out great. They pack tightly and let nothing through.

If you are into reusing paint then these bunkers are great. Most paint fired into them embed in them and do not break.

Also a great way to put grass clippings to good use, and are environmentally friendly... smell good too.

Ideas For Cheap Homemade Paintball Bunkers

In response to an entry I wrote on pbjunkie.com, a fellow user listed some helpful tips on material ideas for homemade paintball bunkers. I wrote a post about using pallets as bunkers, but below you can find a couple more good ideas.

Check these out.

Old garage doors. Most door companies have no idea where to toss the old doors they get. I found a company that gave us, and delivered about 70! We built an entire maze out of them!

We also contacted a local cannery that pickled peppers. They cant use any damaged plastic drums and actually pay people to take them. We banded and fastened them together... BAM instant speedball course for free!

Get with your local beverage distributor to see if they have any plastic pallets they want to toss. Never rot and can be screwed together.

Also, if you're near an import area, contact the local pier or harbor master to remove old stevedoring pallets. They're huge (metal or plastic) solid pallets.

Telephone, cable and private contractors gave us spools that we used for obstacles and we also used them as tables in the staging area.

Lastly, big-box home improvement stores were more than willing to give us their off-sized cuts left over from customers.

So as you can see there are plenty of other alternatives for paintball bunkers besides wooden pallets. These alternatives consist of spools, plastic drums, and garage doors. If you know who to ask you can even find them for free, which means you get to build yourself a free paintball field.

Bunker Scrub Paintball Bunker Cleaner

Paintball field owners know exactly how tough it is to scrub off a days worth of paint off of a couple dozen paintball bunkers. The larger the field the worse the job, and it isn't exactly one of best parts of running a paintball field. You think water would do the trick, but surprisingly sometimes it doesn't.

The experienced field owners know it takes a nice mixture of de-greasing soap and water to really get the job done. I'm not sure how much more sophisticated you need to get. Do you really need to buy specialty cleaner to get broken paintballs off of an air bunker? I wouldn't think so, but the manufacturer of BunkerScrub thinks you do.

Just look at how effective BunkerScrub is at removing dry paint off of a paintball bunker (picture). But you know what? I'm sure its effective and all, but how complex of a cleaning solution do you need to remove paint? Heck, hot water will do the trick in most cases, and its a lot cheaper then whatever they are charging.

I'm all for new ideas to help out paintball field owners in running their business, but is a bunker cleaning solution really necessary? Or better yet... can paintball field owners afford to buy gallons of this stuff on the meager profits they already make?

Homemade Paintball Bunkers

Homemade paintball bunkers are easy to make, here I will show you how to make a clean and effective paintball bunker out of shipping pallets and other parts. Finding the right pallet to make homemade paintball bunkers can be tricky as many shipping pallets have spaces in between them. Note the picture on the left side showing the different kinds of shipping pallets you can find.

If you take a close look you can see that the top two pallets have some pretty wide spaces between each board, wide enough for paintballs and a generous amount of spray to get through. No one wants to hide behind something that does not provide adequate cover, so these will not work alone.

TIP - If these are the only kind of pallets you can get your hands on, don't fret, if you have a roll of old carpet you can make these work. Grab a staple gun and cut out squares of carpet as large as the pallet and staple them on securely. The best part about having bunkers like this is paintballs will bounce off unharmed, allowing you to pick them up afterwards and save a tremendous amount of paintballs. Sadly, not all of us have spare rolls of carpet laying around, but you may be able to find some from a neighbor).

The bottom two drum pallets are ideal for paintball bunkers, and the spaces in between each board is minuscule, so only some spray from broken paint can get through (a very small amount if any). You will have no problem using these to make homemade paintball bunkers, and they are exceptionally easy to stand up.

The perfect tool for standing these pallets up is metal fence posts. You can find them at various hardware stores for pretty cheap. However, it is possible to find them for extra cheap if you contact a farmer/rancher that previously put up new fencing. A lot of times they have spare posts left over and will gladly sell them to you at a discount. You will want the T style fencing posts which are pictured at the left along with a handy tool called a post pounder (fence poster). It is an absolutely essential tool for driving these stakes into the ground, and makes it much easier than using a brick or hammer (done it before, not fun).

If you think you can get by with wooden steaks think again, they often break while trying to drive into the ground, plus they often do not last as long as the metal ones. The metal posts stay firmly in the ground and can take a beating, so I guess it all depends on how professional you want your homemade paintball bunkers to be. If you plan on moving them around a lot and having the field for a while definitely get metal T-posts. They only cost $2.39 a post at Lowes, so they are worth the small investment.

You can find pallets at numerous places, but the best place I have found to get pallets for free is larger industrial hardware stores that constantly are shipping in large orders of supplies on skids. You can often find pallets stacked on the side of the building, and chances are if they have been sitting there for months they do not need them, meaning you can usually get them for free. I got 50 pallets free this way, and all I had to do was ask. They were more than happy to give them up.

The reason pallets make great bunkers is you can drive a T-post right into the ground where you want a bunker and put the pallet right over the top of it so the post goes between it. Pallets have a nice space in between them which gives enough room for a post to stand it up. All you have to do to secure it even more is grab some cheap wire at a hardware store and wire it to the post. This really isn't necessary, since the pallet is secured by the post, but it does keep it from moving the tiny bit of space that remains between the post and pallet sides.

If you get enough pallets, who knows what you can create, some have gone so far as to create houses out of them, so let your creativity take over, and do not limit yourself to just using one pallet for a bunker. Want to see some homemade paintball fields?
